Beach Boys was a particularly personal project for me, and my contribution came through the written side of the book. I wrote the introduction, a very personal text that helped establish the tone and create an entry point into the story that followed. Rather than simply describing the images, the text was about creating a sense of atmosphere and giving the project a voice of its own. Working on the book also gave me the opportunity to engage with the wider creative process, learning how elements such as tone, casting, location and photography come together to shape a visual narrative. It was a project where writing became one part of a much larger conversation between image, people, place and atmosphere.
